Early production Diamond Chair designed by Harry Bertoia for Knoll, dating to the early to mid 1950s. This example retains its original shock mounts and original upholstered seat pad, both key indicators of early manufacture and increasingly difficult to find intact.
The chair features Bertoia’s iconic welded steel wire construction, conceived as a sculptural exploration of space, line, and transparency while remaining fully functional. Early Knoll production is distinguished by subtler wire proportions, hand-finished details, and rubber shock mounts that were later altered in subsequent decades.
The original upholstery shows gentle, even wear consistent with age, contributing to an authentic patina that collectors often prefer over later replacements or restorations. The wire frame remains structurally sound and visually strong, with no distortions that compromise the form.
An important and highly collectible example of mid-century American design, well suited for both residential interiors and curated commercial or gallery settings. A cornerstone piece from Knoll’s early modern period and one of Bertoia’s most celebrated designs.
